The Department of Social Work, Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), observed World Social Work Day 2025 with a series of insightful discussions and cultural engagements, aligning with this year’s theme, “Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing.”

The event, held on March 18, 2025 was attended by faculty, students, and distinguished guests, underscored the critical role of intergenerational collaboration in fostering sustainable development and social harmony.

The program began with Master of Social Work (MSW) students delivering a thematic presentation through song and slides, highlighting core social work values. The key highlight of the event was a panel discussion, featuring eminent personalities from academia and the social sector.

Prof. Dinesh Baishya (Head, Centre for Indian and Indigenous Knowledge System, ADBU) spoke on the significance of incorporating indigenous knowledge into social work education, emphasizing its relevance in sustainable community development.

Mr. Romen Ningthoujam (Regional Coordinator, GOONJ Assam) shed light on the role of professional social work in community empowerment, particularly in disaster management and resilience-building initiatives in Northeast India.

Dr. Ramesh Sharma (Associate Professor, Department of English, ADBU), examined the complexities of intergenerational solidarity, discussing historical and contemporary challenges associated with bridging societal gaps.

The discussion, chaired by Fr. (Dr.) Joy Mathew Ullattil, provided a thought-provoking analysis of the intergenerational gap, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to foster inclusivity and mutual support across age groups. The event was formally inaugurated by Dr. Subhrangshu Dhar, Head, Department of Social Work, who offered a comprehensive overview of the theme and its relevance in today’s social landscape.

As part of the celebrations, students across disciplines participated in an extempore speech competition and cultural performances aligned with the theme. An interactive Q&A session further enriched the discussions, allowing participants to explore various dimensions of intergenerational solidarity.

The programme concluded with an awards ceremony, recognizing the outstanding contributions of participants. Dr. Kheyali Roy, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, ADBU delivered the vote of thanks, reiterating the importance of fostering deeper intergenerational connections to build a more inclusive and resilient society.
